Winter Wade for Smallmouth Two Hours One Fish

It hasn’t quite felt like winter yet, with temperatures still hovering around 50 to 60 degrees, but I’m taking advantage of the mild weather to get outdoors and fish. I’ll fish when it drops below 50, but once temps hit 45 or lower, that’s usually my cut-off. Anything closer to freezing, and I’m calling it quits!

I’ve met plenty of people who don’t fish during the winter—some of them probably never even considered it. Was there some unspoken rule at some point in history saying we’re not supposed to fish in the colder months? Or is it all about comfort? I’m not sure, but I can tell you this: I love fishing in the winter.

Yes, fishing can be slower, but there’s something special about exploring the water this time of year. The landscape transforms, the world quiets down, and if you dress appropriately and take the right precautions, you can fully enjoy the experience. Sure, you’ll deal with more layers, icy cold water, and a chilling wind that takes your breath away—but the serene, hibernating atmosphere is worth it.  Winter fishing offers a beautiful place for quiet reflection. If you’ve never tried it, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, slow down your pace, and soak in the experience. It’s a chance to enjoy the water in a whole new way.

If you’re thinking about winter fishing, preparation is key. Dress for the weather, take safety seriously, and make sure you’ve got the right gear.

Here are a few gear ideas to help you make the most of your winter fishing adventures.  Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you out there!
