Episode Overview: Another blessed day on the water. Conner and I spent the day chasing trout at Roaring River State Park in southwest Missouri. The park is divided into different fishing zones, each with its own regulations, and on this trip we decided to focus on Zone 3.
With it being Father’s Day weekend, the park was absolutely packed with families enjoying the outdoors. In all my years of visiting Roaring River, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen it this busy. But while the upper sections of the park were seeing what felt like record attendance, Zone 3—below the old dam—was a completely different story.
This stretch is often overlooked, and because of that, we practically had the entire river to ourselves. We only crossed paths with one other angler all day. Zone 3 isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for a more intimate experience away from the crowds, I challenge you to give it a try sometime. You may not find as many trout, but you’ll find plenty of peace and quiet.
We covered less than half a mile of water and found some quality fish. The numbers weren’t impressive, but that doesn’t matter. Sure, Conner and I like to poke fun at each other and brag about fish counts—that’s part of the fun—but the real reward was simply being out there together.
Truth be told, Conner was perfectly happy catching creek chubs all day. He claims he doesn’t like trout fishing, but I think he just hasn’t quite cracked the code yet. Either way, we had a blast doing what we love.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing so many parents fishing alongside their kids throughout the park. It was a great reminder of how special places like Roaring River really are. I’m incredibly grateful for this resource and the opportunities it provides for families to connect with the outdoors.
Fishing heals. I truly believe that. And in one way or another, I think we all need a little healing. AMEN.
