On The Hunt Ozark Smallmouth Adventure on the James River
Share
On this mid-September day, I had the chance to hit the water once again with Ozarks native Ryan Walker, owner of OSA Guides and Outfitters. The water was low and clear, with a light overcast sky and a spit of rain that cooled things off — the kind of day when a light jacket would’ve come in handy.
We made the most of it, exploring yet another beautiful stretch of the James River. I’m grateful for any day spent on the water, especially from the raft — which, truth be told, is a challenge all on its own. Standing at the bow while Ryan skillfully guides us through winding channels, dodging timber and massive root balls, all while trying to balance, cast, and manage your line… it’s no easy task.
I’m no expert at it, that’s for sure. But for every tangle, every bad cast, and every balled-up line, Ryan never once judged. That’s the mark of a true guide. Ryan genuinely cares about people. He sees potential in others, offers advice when it’s needed, and never passes judgment. That kind of attitude makes all the difference — both on and off the water.
Owning our challenges and talking about them isn’t always easy, but it’s part of the journey. So, if you’ve ever wanted to challenge yourself and experience a true Ozark fly fishing adventure, do yourself a favor and reach out to Ryan Walker. You won’t be disappointed.
