Foam and feathers. Did I get your attention? Man, I hope so.
Some of my favorite fly-fishing adventures over the years have involved throwing simple foam popping bugs. There’s just something about watching a fish come up and crush a fly on the surface that never gets old. And honestly, they don’t have to be complicated.
A little foam. A few feathers. Maybe some rubber legs. Mix in your favorite colors, shapes, and combinations, and suddenly you’ve got a fly that not only looks good but can be an absolute blast to fish.
That’s one of the things I love about tying with foam. It’s inexpensive, easy to experiment with, and there are seemingly endless possibilities. You can follow a proven pattern or sit down at the vise and just start creating. Sometimes simple works.
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at a monthly meeting of the Heart of America Fly Fishers in Kansas. I really enjoyed sharing my story, talking fly fishing, and meeting so many great people. It was also pretty cool seeing a few familiar faces—friends and longtime supporters of CASTAFLY.
One of the best parts of visiting fly-fishing clubs is what happens after the presentation. You start talking about rivers, flies, fishing stories, techniques, and before long somebody mentions a pattern that sends the conversation in a completely different direction.
That night, I found myself talking with John Wagner, one of the club’s many talented fly tiers. During our conversation, I asked John a simple question:
“Do you ever tie Sam’s One Bug?”
Apparently, that question lit a little fire under ol’ John. Because about a week later, something showed up in my mailbox. Who doesn’t love unexpected fishing mail?
Come on—you know you do.
There’s just something about finding a package in the mailbox that you weren’t expecting. And when you realize there are flies inside? Even better.
John had taken our conversation home with him, sat down at the vise, and shared some of his talent with me. That meant a lot.
Fly fishing has introduced me to some incredible people over the years, and moments like this remind me that this sport is about so much more than catching fish.
It’s about community. It’s about friendships. It’s about sharing what we know.
And sometimes it’s simply about taking a little time to do something nice for somebody else. We all have gifts.
Maybe you can tie incredible flies. Maybe you’re great at teaching someone how to cast. Maybe you know a creek like the back of your hand. Maybe you’re the person who invites the new angler along when nobody else does.
The question is: Do you share your gift? John did.
So, John Wagner, thank you, brother. Thank you for sharing your talent with me and, more importantly, for having such a giving and supportive heart.
I love giving my son Conner a hard time, but yes—I finally broke down and shared a few of John’s patterns with him. I couldn’t keep all those good flies to myself!
And John… check your mailbox, buddy. I’ve got your address now, and I’ve got a little something headed your way.
GET LOST. Go explore. And maybe throw a little foam and feathers while you’re out there.
