Chasing Ozark Bronze: Fall Fly Fishing

πŸŽ₯ Location: Shoal Creek | Tipton Ford Public Access

🎣 Target Species: Smallmouth Bass

🌧️ Conditions: Wet, Cloudy, and Perfect

πŸ“ The Backcast (Episode Overview): When the clouds roll in and the fall colors light up the Ozarks, there’s no better time to chase smallmouth bass on the fly. In this episode, we wade through misty rain, slick rocks, and cloudy water in search of that native bronze Ozark smallmouth.

I was contacted by one of my subscribers, Taylor β€” better known as ChubbyCreeks on Instagram. He mentioned he was making the trip down from Kansas City to fish southwest Missouri, and after a quick chat, we decided to explore a stretch of water that was new to him but one I was excited to share.

We’ve had plenty of rain and overcast skies lately, and the creek was running a little high but still perfectly wadeable. The water carried a soft, cloudy tint, and light sprinkles followed us through most of the day. We didn’t cover more than a mile upstream from the public access, but every bend brought new beauty β€” from quiet pools and fallen leaves to thick vegetation and that deep Ozark forest vibe.

At the end of the day, it’s never about the numbers. It’s about the hunt, the solitude, and the heart of fly fishing. Sharing the water with Taylor reminded me that this journey is about more than fish β€” it’s about friendship, connection, and soaking in every moment the fall season has to offer.
