When you first get into fly fishing, we all tend to gravitate toward our favorite gear. The great thing about this sport is the variety of choices available to suit your style.
Some anglers prefer the feel of a medium-action rod, while others lean toward the responsiveness of a fast-action rod. But one thing we can all agree on is the desire for high-quality gear at a reasonable price.
In my experience, Cortland has done an incredible job of delivering both. Fly fishing often carries a reputation for being expensive, but part of my goal is to break down that stigma by sharing my personal journey.
Thanks to Cortland Line, I’ve been one very satisfied angler.

Currently running this on both my 6wt and 7wt setup. Cortland’s Specialty Series Bass Intermediate line was designed to cover all subsurface bass tactics. A 26ft Intermediate tip allows your fly to get down in current and effectively fish submerged structure.
I'm currently running this on my 6wt rod setup. Shoots like a dream. I've always struggled with mending, but this line lifts beautifully for me. This is my goto line when chasing smallmouth in the Ozarks. Give it shot you won’t be disappointed.
When I'm chasing trout I'm usually dropping dry flies or stripping smaller streamers. I've fished with many different lines over the years and this line truly fishes like a dream. Currently running this on my 5wt setup. Give this line a try!
When building fishing leaders I use Cortland’s Monofilament Nylon Leader Material to build all my bass fishing leaders. I use 4ft of 20lb down to a micro swivel then add 2ft of 14lb down to my fly. Simple to build and gets the job done.
For my trout fishing leaders I use Cortland’s Fluorocarbon XTR Leader Material to build all my trout fishing leaders. For chunkin’ smaller streamers I use 4ft of 10lb down to a micro swivel then add 2ft of 5X down to my fly. Simple and effective.
Cortland’s Top Secret Ultra-Premium Tippet features a plasma finish that allows for enough shock absorption upon hooksets without overstretching and becoming weak. 5X and 6X is always in my bag especially for dry fly fishing.
I wanted to have a new reel for my 6wt rod setup so I chose Cortland’s Crown Series. I have float line spooled up and have second spool for intermediate line. This enables me to carry the extra spool and be ready for any condition.
If your looking for a complete fly-fishing setup I encourage you to check out this very affordable option from Cortland. I would suggest looking at the 5WT 9FT rod. This would be a great choice for both beginner and intermediate level anglers.
If your new to fly fishing it’s easy to be overwhelmed with what you need to know. Packaged tapered leaders can help keep things simple. Cortland offers a great selection to get you on the water so you can fish with confidence.
